Yoga Volunteer Corps

atom
What happens when you mix the ever-green and growing ventures of yoga and volunteerism?

One of our new frontiers for 2009 will be to launch the Yoga Volunteer Corps to coordinate the seva of yoga teachers who wish to join by matching them with nonprofit organizations whose clients would love to learn and practice yoga but cannot afford it. We love yoga. We love sharing yoga. We're dedicated to transformation through yoga and volunteerism... so this is a next step.

Here's a quick example... at a recent visit to nonprofit agency for those with developmental disabilities, we met a sweet woman in her 50's.  Staff had noted that her lower back was bothering her and the doctor said she needed to stretch and strengthen these muscles. She processes and communicates differently than we do: she does not speak but greeted us with a lovely twinkle in her eye. Though she's never 'studied' yoga she was naturally sitting on a straightback chair in a modifed lotus pose!

Another agency, one that serves people with HIV/AIDs, described the social isolation and depression that often accompanies these medical diagnoses. Two days after meeting this group, Ajay served a patient in the pharmacy who had stopped taking HIV medication for three months due to lack of hope.  Both she and her daughter have HIV.

So... perhaps you can see why we feel this is important. We welcome you to join us in expanding the scope and genuine hope of yoga.

We invite yoga teachers,  nonprofits and sponsors/donors interested in more info to contact us!   We are seeking input on and sponsorship for:
~ developing the model
~ establishing the yoga curriculum
~ training modules for yoga teachers
~ teaching the yoga classes (teachers only)
~ scaling the model

Watch for more exciting info in 2009!

Thriving Anniversary

yogaHappy first year to our Thriving with Yoga program!

As the group marks its first anniverary this month, we celebrate sleeping better, managing stress and hot flashes, and coming off blood pressure medication!

We are grateful to the Mass Yoga Network and Team Survivor who provided start-up support, to the Franco-American Centre in Manchester for opening their museum space for our practice, and to A Market Natural Foods Education Center who provided our initial location.

Now that we have a larger space, we invite women and men with a current or past diagnosis of cancer to enjoy these free yoga and meditation classes on Monday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. in Manchester, NH. Please visit this link for more info and to register. If you prefer another day, time or location, please let us know.

Yoga Education Program: Recent Service to City of Nashua, Consumer Science Conference & High School Teens
Our recent yoga education/outreach included:
  1. A wonderful day with current and retired city employees (teachers, maintenance staff, managers, etc.) to offer education on the health benefits of yoga practices such as breathing techniques, using the neti pot and gentle movements to relieve stress.
  2. Presentation to the National Consumer Sciences group at their annual conference at the Radisson Hotel. In a fun and interactive format, they practiced tips and techniques for bringing yoga into their classrooms.
  3. Completion of a 6-week program for high school students which included yoga to help with decision making, concentration, self-esteem and stress management. One student reported her finding that yoga was especially helpful in "getting through piles of homework" and also in taking tests.

Please contact us if you (or someone you know) might like to host a program like this at your organization or workplace.

Holiday Cards for Cure

SnowmanRecently we met Keri Adams, a talented local artist who is making a difference. After creating these lovely holiday designs, she coordinated with a printer to make them into holiday greetings.  A pack of 10 cards is  offered for $5, and 100% of the proceeds goes to the 3Day Breast Cancer Walk 2009 which goes to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The cards are blank inside, are printed on recycled paper.

Keri used a stippling technique which forms an image by making dots on the paper.  From a yogic perspective, all creation emerges from/is contained in a dot, or point, which expands in all directions and dimensions.  We thank Keri for her 'one-pointed' dedication and for inspiring us!  For more info on how to order...
